Professional Accountability at Every Level
In 1989 David Dinkins was elected as the first black mayor of New York City. At that time in history the entire country, and New York City in particular, was embroiled in an environment of frequent criminality. The environment that fostered this behavior was complex and systemic. Mayor Dinkins was a testament to understanding and treating all aspects of these complexities, to the best of one's ability as a leader. In fact, he is probably one of the best leaders this country has ever had, but is rarely spoken or written about.
Mayor David Dinkins understood many things about what perpetuates and facilitates crime and suffering in the vacuum of the diverse, large, varied, and yet compact, claustrophobic, and singularly unified environment of a large urban city. Many people of New York, Chicago, Paris and London feel they are more New Yorkers, Chicagoans, Parisians, or Londoners than they do any sort of nationalistic fervor. The anxiety and struggle and beauty and closeness of a city offer a feeling of comradery in the face of adversity, in most cases.
Dinkins saw and believed in that comradery, and he identified the problems stifling it. He funded homeless shelters and community programs to keep people out of the cycle of homelessness. He kept public highschools open every night so dispossessed or otherwise hurt teenagers would have a safe place. He created Beacon Schools which are still operating. He properly funded the police force and integrally held them accountable to civilian review boards.
That is what this article is about, accountability.
A researcher at an institution is accountable to a neutral ethics review board before they undergo any sort of project, due to abuses in the past. A medical professional is accountable to HIPPA compliance and neutral state medical boards, due to abuses in the past. Police officers are only accountable to other police officers, despite abuses in the past. Except for in Mayor Dinkins brief tenure, and in the tenure of other such enlightened leaders.
It is time to take the job of a police officer as seriously as the job of a medical professional, or a researcher at a university. Not to infer the same respect on the position, but to recognize the position as one that has the potential to endanger and take the lives of many people. It should be a job that requires years, not months of training. It should be difficult to be a police officer, it should require nuanced and intense education in our history as a nation and our racial biases. There should be severe background checks, and making so much as one allusion to a white supremacist organization should be grounds for non-hire, or if after hire, immediate dismissal.
Police do not require that level of oversight, but if they were required to answer to a civilian review board, they absolutely would. A board of accountability operated by the people, the police police, was the way Mayor David Dinkins considered the best path forward.
When Mayor Dinkins enacted the civilian review board there were mass ‘protests’ by police officers, over-dramatically condemning him for ‘stifling their ability to do their job’. If the police cannot do their job without being accountable to the communities they police then they should not be doing that job at all. If you cannot do your job without being accountable to someone other than your co-worker, you are not fit to do your job. People working at Starbucks, grocery stores, hospitals, universities and donut shops are highly aware of that, yet many members of the police felt the need to protest a simple measure of protection in the early 1990’s.
In Mayor Dinkins tenure as the first black mayor of New York City crime rates dramatically dropped every single year he was in office. Yet, he was defeated by Rudy Giuliani, the incumbent, who claimed he was a “crime-busting” candidate. Much like President Barack Obama was defeated by President Trump who claimed he would “Make America Great Again”.
What crime needed to be busted when the systemic work was being put in to make the people of New York happier, healthier, mentally well, and with places to sleep? When the work was put in to keep the police accountable for their atrocities? How has America become great, in any sense, under the insipid incompetence and malice of our current administration? America does not become great from a despot with a repurposed slogan. Crime is not busted by inducing a police state onto the citizens of New York City, as Giuliani did in the 90’s, and as the current administration is attempting right now on a grand-scale.
All of us who have professions that involve human life, require, nourish, and grow from accountability. It is the only ethical way to do that job.
I urge anyone who bothered to read this to donate to bail funds for protesters, BLM, Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, funds for families who have lost loved ones. If you live in Chicago look into the Civilian Police Accountability council and the efforts made to enact this legislation. And if possible, push for similar reform in your local communities.
Thank you to Mayor David Dinkins.

We Asked Presidential Candidates what 7+3 is....Their Answers will Shock You
We got together the last bastion of hope in our political processes and the devil himself as they bid for presidential prestige and asked them all what 7+3 is to see if they really know their stuff. Let's see what they have to say!
Joe Biden: "The middle class isn't a number -- it's a set of values. Owning your home. Sending your kids to college. Being able to save and get ahead. Across the country, too many families are being left behind.
Wow Joe! We never thought 7+3 might equal equability before!
Bernie Sanders: "I'm running for President so that, when we are in the White House the movement we build together can achieve economic, racial, and environmental justice for all. Also the answer is 10, but I had to get that out there first."
This is the kind of guy who not only knows what 7+3 is, he also knows how to express a message <3
Elizabeth Warren: "I am no longer in this race but want to express briefly that not only must we know the answer to 7+3 we must also be aware of the steps it takes to reach the answer to what is 7+3"
Thanks Liz! I wish you were my mother.
Bernie Sanders from the past: 10. Why are you asking me this? On a side note: I hope things never get so bad I feel compelled to run for president.
Man! Just goes to show how policy is ever-evolving!
Donald Trump: 28. And anyone who says otherwise is a liar. How about those Oscars? Also one time I clogged a toilet. Lets talk about that for 25 minutes.
Fuck You

Study from MIT finds Cheetos, White Wine, Hydrogen Peroxide and Whisky not a bad mix
While studying Fraternity brothers at MIT, graduate students from MIT decided to see how far the limits of the physical human form could be taken.
in this photo: research subjects
Using key word phrases like, "I dare you" "Don't be a little bitch" and "You act like a pussy"
the MIT students managed to force feed the Fraternity brothers a variety of interesting chemical compounds and food combinations, the most fascinating combo being forced upon Chett Raker originally of Anaheim.
Chett consumed:
1 pound of Cheetos
2 Bottles of White Wine
A bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide
20.8 fluid ounces of Whisky
Mr. Raker then proceeded to write a series of soliloquies shocking frat brothers and researchers alike, before passing out in an inflatable kiddie pool.
Truly the good folks at MIT are fighting the good fight and doing the kind of research this country needs.

Here are 5 Effective Ways to finally matter in society!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1) Drink Apple Cider Vinegar and Destroy the Lining of Your Stomach
What a Truly Ugly Woman. Nothing about this is Beautiful.
The best way to have a flat stomach that looks really good, but is disintegrating beneath the surface, is to drink vinegar. Ulcers do not matter when you are pretty enough to forget that you are sad!
2) Go on an Expensive Juice Cleanse and Deprive your Body of Basic Nutrients
Wow I would never want to desperately hold and love this person.
When you are The Sexy One that everyone is talking about you will be happy that you have given yourself osteoporosis by depriving your body of calcium and protein for weeks at a time. Nothing is healthier than only eating fruit because the fruit is healthy right? Right. I am the Doctor Oz that loves Sexy One's. Trust me.
3) Drink Black Coffee Constantly and Erode the Enamel of your Teeth
Never in my life would I abandon a small family I had acquired to fall into the arms of this cigar woman
Nothing says sexy like black coffee, a cigarette, and no teeth. Trust me I am Doctor Oz. I know the secrets to women and their hearts and I know the secrets to that desolate flatness you so desire. I am the Doctor Oz.
look the doctor oz, he is normal, trust me

Biological Clock in Sync with Doomsday Clock
In this Picture: Anxiety?
It appears that 15-year old women across the world are now
biologically in-sync with the Doomsday clock, as of its new inching toward
midnight.
This is an interesting development, as it indicates that as
soon as this generation of women is emotionally and financially mature enough
to proliferate our species, the majority of humanity will be obliterated.
For
some, like Jessica Statler of Long-Island, this comes as a relief. “You know, I
never really wanted to have children, or live past 30. I guess I’ve always been
kind of a free spirit? With the rising wave of feminism I don’t really see why
I should be too devastated about not living long enough to feel the biological
urge to procreate.”
Some, like Devon Brookshire of Conway, Arkansas are
unfettered by the news. “I have really tough skin. It’s often described as
scaly. For that reason I feel like I could easily survive a Nuclear Holocaust
and in the rubble raise the idyllic family I always imagined having. 2 kids, an
equally scaly husband, and a beautiful cottage-home, built upon the ashes of
history.”
Man on LSD who just Discovered the Universe is One Eternal Ring of Love and Forgiveness: Mugs and Beats the Shit out of Himself
In this Picture: The Ubiquitous Beauty of Nature?
Area man, Matthew (Matty boy) Nichols, who dropped acid late Wednesday afternoon promptly discovered that pain is an illusion and the universe is in fact one being, filled with never-ending love and acceptance. Shortly after making that realization on his walk home from the EL, Nichols somehow managed to mug and beat the shit out of himself.
As Nichols looked into the eyes of his assailants, of whom he was convinced were just different manifestations of the one true being of the universe, he wondered out-loud why he should be so cruel to himself under the current conditions.
While nursing the multiple welts that had grown underneath his eyes he could only think, "my bruises are love, my bleeding is love, the hooded man who stabbed me multiple times uncaring as to whether I lived or died is love."
Nichols was disappointed as to what a bummer this experience with himself turned out to be, but looks forward to spending the next 12 hours awake in bed, in pain, and staring at bright geometrical lights manifesting in multiple parts of his 3X5 bedroom that he pays 600 dollars a month for, truly everything is love.

Are you a productive and determined person, or just Manic-Depressive?
In this photo: The stock photo cake we all deserve
As you fill your every waking hour with commitment after commitment you may start to feel you finally got a handle on this whole life thing. When that happens step back and analyze whether or not your brain is emitting a series of chemicals in an abnormal way and that is the only reason why you are feeling so unfettered by the pain of human existence. Now start working on this cake! It is three in the morning and somebody needs to be making this cake. Might as well be you. Hey why don't you also start to write that screenplay you've been thinking about making all these years! Try not to get too much flour on the keyboard as you do both at the same time and also smoke a cigarette. You're a real go-getter. "Go-getter done" as you always like to say.
Anyway maybe take a moment and think about whether or not you have slept in the last few weeks. If the answer to that question is no make sure you drink more coffee! Completely stop listening to your body and allow your mania to blissfully pull you away from the problems of the universe. Most importantly don't forget about that cake! It is four in the morning and you have friends that would be so excited if you gave them a cake. Make sure you make it extra spongey and moist. Don't forget the flour! And also eggs. Most cakes have flour and eggs. No reason to look up a recipe you are a regular chef and could probably make this cake from memory because you are so good at everything you do.
As you forget about the pain of human existence and munch munch on this cake cake. Don't forget that research from the University of Michigan shows that you are probably manic-depressive. Yes, specifically you Alicia. Quit working on that cake and go to bed Alicia. And that is everything that the University of Michigan reported!

Here are some words I learned
In this photo: education?!
Let us consider what place intersectional identity has in terms of making a larger statement in analyzing our own position of white cisgender privilege in a racially divisive society that also happens to be white-enabling. One second I have to put on a jazz record and pour some whisky before I continue talking about the real world problems. Okay I am back now. I am back to make a critical judgement and analysis of our own perpetuation of oppressive systems that attempt to marginalize those who don't happen to fit into the already pre-defined social structures that keep us all stuck in a box. A box that doesn't include queerness by the way. On that note let me get my huge fucking cigar out so I can puff puff while I think think.
Wait I need to stop for a second and just say something outright. The world is fucking horrible and horrible things are happening daily and I don't know how to deal with and these words are protecting me from feeling anything real and I need them I need these words. What I'm trying to say is racism sucks. Homophobia and transphobia suck. That's what I'm trying to say. I am afraid we are all afraid. Violence permeates so much of our daily existence. What is happening?! That's what I'm trying to say.
Anyway as we consider what place intersectional identity has in terms of making a larger statement in analyzing our own position of white cisgender privilege let us not forget what that means for trans-identity and let us also not forget to buy more Miles Davis on vinyl.

This Article is about my Ex-Boyfriend but I will Pretend it's About Sexism
I, like all women, deal with the harmful realities of sexism everyday. We have to fight against the men (Justin Banks) that would harm us. We also have to stand up against the women (that skinny bitch Sherona he is fucking) who are so competitive instead of collaborative in our fight for equality.
One day we will all stand up and be equals. There will no longer be a pay gap and Sherona will no longer have a thigh gap because her metabolism will slow as she gets older and her skin will get saggy and she'll have more wrinkles than me probably too Justin. I am not upset. I am not upset. I am not upset. I'm just thinking a lot about sexism.
Life is about making choices. I am pro-choice. But not when it comes to dumping me you had no good reason to dump me you are just afraid of love and commitment like a little child and Sherona is a little child as well so I'm sure you guys are a perfect fit for each other.
Anyway sexism is a serious issue that has been engrained in our culture for thousands of years. I think it would be best if we all took a step back in our lives and analyzed how it has affected us individually. Like me right now. I hate myself because I cannot be with you and I am not Sherona who has pretty hair and knows how to twirl it.
Anyway sexism is a serious issue that has been engrained in our culture for thousands of years.

Breaking News: Kanye West Has Been Alive Forever
According to Kanye West, Kanye West has been alive forever.
The news came bright and early via social media last night, and the world is in shock. As doctors and archaeologists across the globe attempt to figure out just how this is possible, Kanye West had this to say
"Kanye HAS NEVER NOT BEEN ALIVE. Kanye West HAS NEVER NOT BEEN ALIVE. NEVER NOT"
While requesting that he meet with top officials, and business leaders across the world, in order to spread his messianic message, Kanye made the bold claim that he has the power to make books cheaper.
Commenting on the possible mental health crisis her husband is in, Kim Kardashian had this to say,
"Please put me in the article you write about Kanye"

We Asked Presidential Candidates what 6+4 is....Their Answers Will Shock You
We got together a slew of Presidential candidates and asked what 6+4 is, just to see if they really know their stuff. Let's see what they had to say!
Hillary Clinton: "America and our allies, especially Israel, will be safer if we vigorously enforce the nuclear agreement with Iran and implement a broader strategy to confront Iran’s bad behavior in the region."
Wow! We never thought about basic math that way before.
Jeb Bush: "The cornerstone of any effective military, counterterrorism or homeland security effort is ensuring accurate and actionable intelligence."
Well, we better ADD that to our agenda!
Bernie Sanders: Scientists warn us if we continue burning fossil fuels, we will experience cataclysmic change, in terms of more disease, more hunger, more drought, more famine, rising sea levels, more floods, more ocean acidification, more extreme weather disturbances and more human suffering.
YES! Finally someone answers the question what is 6+4 in a way that makes sense.
Ben Carson: "Keeping Gitmo open is a critical element in our never-ending efforts to keep the American people safe from another cataclysmic terrorist attack."
That's a pretty radical answer to what is 6+4
Bernie Sanders from the Past: 10. I hope I don't ever run for President.
Just goes to show how policies evolve over time huh?
Donald Trump: Wow, it's 13. Anything else you idiots need me to answer?
Fuck you
Guns Rights Activist Loses Foot in Hunting Accident
Darryl Walker is pictured above. "This is from when I posed for stock photos. That was a great Tuesday." - Darryl Walker
On the 15th of December, 55 year old Darryl Walker was out hunting with some old college buddies when tragedy struck.
Darryl, who friends describe as 'legally blind', mistook his own foot for a Quail while hunting and shot himself in the foot.
Darryl, a long time Guns Rights activist, claims that "absolutely nothing could have prevented this accident." When asked whether the ban of firearms within the United States would have possibly saved Darryl his foot he responded with, "while the firearm that took my foot off had a bullet flying out of its barrel at the speed of 2,500 feet per second, allowing it to have the optimal velocity to perfectly bare through every single tendon at the base of my ankle and leaving me without the ability to walk normally ever again, there is no reason a well-thrown knife could not have done the same damage."
Long-time friend David Wallace of Colorado commented that, "we are all very sad for the loss of Darryl's foot, but this is no time for political talk. This is a time for us to grieve, and we (his friends and family) would prefer that no one discuss any sort of preventive measures to protect people in the future because that's irrelevant."
Darryl went on to claim that several people lose their feet in England every year, despite the fact that guns are illegal in that pansy-ass nation of biscuit-dunkers.
Darryl's most inspiring words came as he spoke about his deep passion for the American people.
"The rights and freedoms of the American public far outweigh the importance of one mans foot. Or the lives of 30,000 Americans every year."

Trying to be A Manic Pixie Dreamgirl
A manic pixie dream girl is a film trope. A manic pixie dream girl is an endlessly fascinating object, that exists in the plot of a story only to help aid in the journey of a lonely, sensitive, artistic man. Considering these scripts are generally written by lonely, "sensitive", and artistic young men, they come across as weird fantasy fulfillment. Please, wear the weird leggings, and fucking send me on an adventure. Please, god, I love the weird leggings, I love the scavenger hunts, make me jump in the pool with all of my clothes on. Fuck. Yes. Harder. Faster. Weirder leggings.
What Manic Pixies Do to Women
This trope has been around forever, women have been compared in literature to nature, to goddesses, and generally as an other, through which men can figure out something essential to their ever important journey forward. The truth, you'll be shocked to find, is that women are humans. (No, don't say that, that ruins it.) Gross and imperfect humans. (Fuck you, they can't be.)
The constant glorification of woman as idol and the cripplingly reality of her truth, that of humanity, leaves young girls feeling disgusted by their own bodies and the humanness (sexual desire, hunger, blemishes) of their existence. Women experience twice the rate of depression than men. While some of this can be attributed to men feeling an inability to admit to the societal "weakness" of depression; much of woman's depression could easily be attributed to her position in the world, and the contradiction of what she must present to fill her role as woman. Also maybe slightly doesn't help that 1 in 6 women are the victim of an attempted, or completed rape in their lifetimes.
When I was 16 years old I (like many 16 year old fucks) was desperate to fall in some sort of love. What scares me about looking back at my mindset, is how rooted my idea of love was, in the loss of my own autonomy. My picture of love went something like this:
Boy is mesmerized by unmatched beauty and charm of Girl (ha!)
Girl is mesmerized by unmatched intelligence and emotional depth of Boy (ha ha!)
Girl fixes broken elements of Boy (while denying all broken elements of self, by the by)
Boy adores Girl for literally only extrinsic value (my look, quirky and nonthreatening talents I possess, that's love right?)
Dear 8th Grade,
I fucking hate you and so does everybody else. Why are you the worst?
Love, Alena
One salty summer me and a close friend were walking on the beach. Wet sand was crunching and congealing in between our toes, we giggled at a stupid joke, and then her blue eyes stared straight into mine, and slowly filled with tears.
42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner. We are scared, and we're told the answer is to look thin, to be beautiful, to satisfy the wants and desires of men. Even the reasons we give ourselves to not be worried about thinness, have to do with saying that what men actually like, is curvy women. This kind of reasoning, doesn't solve any sort of issue, it just highlights the problem. We can't be the perfect object, because we do gain 20 pounds in a year, because wrinkles mark our feelings on our faces, because skin will always learn to sag. We can't confuse our identity with what we look like. And I have to stop objectifying myself.
Women now outnumber men in college enrollment. We don't have to be a slave to male desire. We can create our own lives now, in ways that even our mothers weren't able to.
But I can still see a shared sadness in all women I have met. A quiet lonely look, even (if especially) in those that look at other women as competition, even in those that live their lives differently than I do. We are considered the other still, from that which conquers and creates. so fuck that. Let's make some shit, and do some shit, and keep getting better. Because we don't have to turn ourselves into a boring object of desire. We live in an age and a country where we can be whatever the fuck we want to, and that's horrifying, and freeing. That's what freedom is.

"It is not easy to play the idol, the fairy, the faraway princess, when one feels a bloody cloth between one's legs; and, more generally, when one is conscious of the primitive misery of being a body (Simone de Beauvoir, the second sex, 357). "In the 8th grade, I took gym class and made friends with a group of about, 3 or 4 girls. Everyday after class, we would walk to the locker room, and passively change, while appraising our changing bodies against each other. Many of us, would cover different parts of ourselves (stomach, thighs, breasts) and look down at the floor while we stripped ourselves of sweaty and over-large white t shirts and basketball shorts. I'll never forget, everyday, we weighed each other on a clunky metal scale that sat in the locker room, as we happily discussed the benefits of certain numbers.
Dear 8th Grade,
I fucking hate you and so does everybody else. Why are you the worst?

"Above all, the lie to which the adolescent girl is condemned is that she must pretend to be an object, and a fascinating one, when she senses herself as an uncertain, dissociated being, well aware of her blemishes (Simone de Beauvoir, the second sex, 358). "I still look in the mirror, and trace the patterns of my face. I still dress in ways I know will be appealing to men. I want for want for want for want for beauty. I have for so many years painted an image of myself in my head as a muse; with dark lips, cool clothes, bright hair, interesting things to say at the right time, and a coy smile in my back pocket to use at my discretion. Only now am I realizing that I'm no muse, I'm the sad boy writing in the corner. No woman can be happy as long as she identifies as the other, as the object. To be object is impossible, subject is the only truth we can ever attain.
Women now outnumber men in college enrollment. We don't have to be a slave to male desire. We can create our own lives now, in ways that even our mothers weren't able to.

Learning, The Internet, and Lone Shooters
How do you think that we learn things? There is a lot of varied debate about how human beings acquire knowledge. Are we hard-wired, like machines, with a set of instructions? Or, is everything we learn a result of our environment?
The truth of the matter lies in a joining of theory.
We have innate behavior, the purpose of these behaviors lie in genetic and evolutionary survival. Our innate behavior must be nurtured through our environments, in order for it to be maintained. In situations where innate behavior is not reinforced in a given environment, the behavior stops being exhibited. BUT (this is the important part that's why it's capitalized) all behavior that a specific organism has the physical capabilities of learning, can be re-learned. That fact is important because it brings hope, and hope is fun.
Empathy
Cool. We got it. Lots of potential and shit that makes us feel good about maybe solving problems. Now let's talk about empathy. I mentioned this in my last blog post, but I want to talk about it more in depth here, the Millenial generation is less empathetic than those before.
75% of college students in 2010 are less empathetic than the students of the 1980's, and this lowering of empathy is accompanied with higher reports of narcissism.
Empathy is important for retaining properly running social structures. Being able to empathize keeps us from totally destroying the people around us. Empathy means understanding (or at least trying to understand) why someone else (other than me, I, the great almighty) does, or feels something. If it were hard for me to understand that hurting another person effects them in the same way it would me it would be difficult to stop me, from say, killing them, because of a perceived slight. (I'm not going to murder anyone).
That's the evolutionary reason for empathy, we must continue the human race at all costs, by being nice to each other. All babies (save for those suffering from disorders) are born with the ability to empathize. This means, that we are unlearning empathy. Our environments are not reinforcing or nurturing empathetic behavior, particularly in the last decade.
What the fuck is up environment? Why don't you want me to like people? Why don't you want people to like me?! For one thing, in order to learn empathy we have to be in social situations, and we're not as much anymore. 27% of Americans live alone, and many Millenials have a difficult time navigating even just making friends. We just don't want to hang out, or do things, okay?! It's not a big deal, okay?! God.
The Internet
Ahh, my big old buddy the internet. That big nuanced mass of information. While we can get closer through the internet (I'm writing this post on the internet obvi) we can also start to believe our opinions hold some great magnitude and the world owes it to us to respond to our every want and need (I'm writing this post on the internet obvi).
That inflated sense of self-importance is combined with a constant influx of horrific images, statistics, and violent pornography. All of this is brought to us, through a screen that acts like a safe third party; constantly detaching us from any concept of physical reality. This internet cocktail, when properly mixed, leaves people feeling dejected, angry, bitter, and generally shitty. Sort of just what a regular cocktail does to most members of my family. The things that we see online don't seem real, but they are, very real.
Maybe you had nurturing parents, who taught you the reasons behind scarred faces, and weather worn boots, and suitcases open on the streets with cardboard signs. Or maybe you had friends, that held out steady hands to you while tears wet your face and lap. But maybe, all you ever had was 4chan.
I'm not going to demonize a website. 4chan is a very interesting place. It is one of the only websites functioning that promotes complete anonymity. It disregards and even shits on, upholding an image. People can post on 4chan without worrying about social convention, and the jokes that are birthed from 4chan range from hilarious to existentialist in nature. The users are varied, and I think many of them are intelligent, funny, and important members of their communities.
It is also a place that people go to, because they have to be anonymous to voice their opinions. Their opinions are dangerous, are selfish, and are revolting. 4chan users see so much graphic content on the daily, they have a hard time being shocked by anything. It's not a thing that's happening to them, it's a joke. And it's weird that anyone would be upset by anything, when all of human existence becomes twiddled down into a meme. Who cares that the person in that video was actually killed? What does it matter that you want commit a mass murder? My life is the one life that matters. And these nameless people (with lovers, and parents, and broken homes now), are the reason that I'm having a bad time.
Guns
1 in 3 Americans own a gun. 3/4 of guns used in mass shootings between 1982-2012 were obtained legally. This means that these shooters managed to get a gun, despite the system in place that is supposed to ensure that doesn't happen. Guns don't just kill people in mass shootings however, 33,636 people died from gun violence in the United States in 2013.
18.5% of the American population is diagnosed with a mental illness, making us one of the most mentally ill countries in the world. We are also, one of the most heavily armed countries in the world. 21,175 people committed suicide by firearm in the year 2013. More successful suicides are committed by firearm than any other method employed.
No argument against gun control, justifies the loss of human life, at such staggering rates.
I live in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago has some of the strictest laws on gun usage in the country, and also some of the highest murder rates by firearm. This is because of gun trafficking, this happens very frequently in the city, from other parts of Illinois, and even from bordering states. Chicago has these laws in place, because of the incredible issue of violent crime in the city. Because there aren't federal gun control laws in place, these laws have done little to mitigate the situation. Federal laws are the only way to ensure that we no longer have to suffer violence from the barrel of a gun.
This is not a simple conversation. Guns are not the reason people kill others, or themselves, but they are the easiest and most efficient means to end life. We have to stop that in whatever way we can, that process starts with getting rid of guns.
Today, 31 people in this country, stood still. Metal flashed silver, in their gaping eyes. And now they won't ever stand again.
What did you think? Yes? No? Maybe next time? Comment and we can talk!
